There are now a number of free sites on the internet from which you can download maps and route instructions.

Your destination is Stepping Hill Hospital, Poplar Grove, Stockport.

Use postcode SK2 7JE.

All of these sites will generate a map of the area.

You can zoom in and out to get the scale you want.

Click here for the AA Route Planner: "JustAAsk".

The maps show "Buxton Road/ London Road", which is the A6 and the main road between Stockport and Macclesfield.

A useful landmark is Sainsbury's supermarket, which is adjacent to the A6 and very close to the hospital.

Click on the Stepping Hill site map to see its location relative to the hospital.

The JustAAsk map designates it "superstore".

Change of Road Signs: Advent of the M60.

The motorway which runs round the west, south and east of Manchester was re-named and its junctions re-numbered a few years ago.

It is now the M60, but used to be the M62 and M63.

If you have old maps, you will find that the road signs and junction numbers make no sense.

From the North West:

Coming south on the M6, join the M61 at Junction 30, just south of Preston.

The junction numbers count down and after number 2, on the outskirts of Manchester, you take the right hand lanes.

Follow the signs for the M60, Stockport and Manchester Airport.

There are also signs for Liverpool, the road for which comes off after a few miles, but you are not going there!!.

This takes you on to the M60.

Stay on it, following the signs for Stockport.

After junction 4 the roads for Stockport and Manchester Airport separate.

Follow the signs for Stockport, staying on the M60.

You leave the M60 at Junction 1, signposted “Stockport Town Centre”.

You will see the famous “Pyramid”, a blue construction on the right.

As you leave the motorway, you reach a roundabout.

Take the second exit, for the town centre.

You will see a signpost mentioning the hospital on your left.

Continue straight on at the traffic lights and you will come to a second roundabout.

Take the second exit and pass under the railway viaduct.

You reach a T junction.

This is the A6. Turn right.

The hospital is just over two miles away, straight along the A6 on the right.

From the North East:

The easiest route is to skirt round Manchester on the M62.

Follow the signs for Stockport and Manchester Airport.

This will take you on to the M60.

Continue following the signs for Stockport and leave the M60 at Junction 1, as in the above section for those travelling from the North West.

Continue as in the instructions for those coming from the North West.

From the South:

Coming north on the M6, leave at Junction 19, following the signs for Manchester.

This will take you onto the A556 and then onto the M56.

If you miss Junction 19 on the M6, don’t panic - you can leave at Junction 20 and get onto the M56, but it is slightly longer.

As you approach the outskirts of Manchester, the Motorway splits and you take the left hand one, following the signs for M60 and Stockport.

Leave the M60 at Junction 1 and continue as in the instructions above for those travelling from the North-West.

From the East via the M67:

If you come west via the M67, it splits at junction 1 into the A57 for Manchester and the M60 ring road for Stockport.

Turn left onto the M60.

Leave the M60 at Junction 26, taking the A560 signposted for Stockport.

If you miss this exit, continue to junction 1, come off and follow the instructions for those coming from the North West.

As you leave at junction 26, you pass through one set of lights and reach a large roundabout.

Take the second exit, signposted “Marple”.

Do not be tempted by the third exit which says “Town Centre”.

It is now a “straight-on” drive to reach the A6, on which the hospital is sited.

You pass through six sets of lights.

At this point you will see a huge white concrete building on the left.

Alongside it you come to the seventh set of lights.

Directly ahead is “Topps Tile Centre”.

Turn left at this set of lights.

You are now on the A6.

The hospital is about a mile along this road (A6) on the right.

By Train:

Stockport station is on the A6, about two miles from the hospital.

There is a bus service, but you will probably be best off with a taxi and there are almost always some in attendance.

By Bus:

The Stepping Hill Hospital website has information about bus timetables and routes.

Quite a lot of buses stop within the hospital grounds, close to Pinewood house.

By Air:

Manchester Airport is about ten miles away on the M56.

Your best bet is a taxi.

Hotels & Boarding Houses:

The ones we have picked are mainly on the A6, about half a mile before you get to the hospital.

The hotels are on the left, the boarding houses on the right as you drive towards the hospital from the town centre.

Click here to go to the list of hotels and boarding houses.
