Maternal infection is usually apparent within the first day or two of the puerperium.

It is most often due to genital tract or urinary infection.

It is no longer a notifiable disease, but the fact that it was is a reminder of how serious puerperal infection was for previous generations.

Maternal infection is a rare cause of death in the UK, but is the reason for death in about 30% of cases world-wide.
